Tomorrows Tribe

Tomorrows Tribe was my first individual print project at college and one that I am very proud of. I have only just finished this and I started it back in September. The brief was to create a two coloured screen print inspired by the brand Etro and Tibetan Culture. We had to produce a sketchbook, research board, design board, sample board, print production and a printed length of fabric.

Research

In Tibet they have a festival called the Butter Lamp Festival, this is a celebration where they create sculptures of Buddha, plants, flowers, animals and birds out of butter which they dye to create vibrant and colourful pieces of art, they also create lamps out of butter which they light to represent the light of Buddha.

Mandalas are an important part of Tibetan Buddhism as they are used as a symbolic offering of the universe. Tibetan art shows cleat links to Tibetan Buddhism and usually include different variations of Buddha from bronze statues to shrines as well as thangka paintings and mandalas.

 Designs

When researching Tibet I found out that their main religion is Buddhism, upon finding this I began to research the religion, including celebrations and beliefs. I found out that they have the Dharma-Wheel (also known as the Buddhist Wheel). The Wheel represents the teachings offered by Buddha through the eightfold path. it also represents the endless cycle of Samsara (rebirth) which can only be escaped by the teachings of Buddha. The Dharma-Wheel is also part of the Ashtamangala which is a collection of eight sacred symbols which appear in many religions including Jainism, Hinduism and Buddhism. The eight symbols are a parasol, a pair of golden fish, a conch, a treasure vase, a lotus, the Endless knot, victory banner and the Dharma-Wheel. The Endless knot has no end which symbolises the wisdom of Buddha, it also symbolises Samsara. So when i was creating my designs I wanted them to include the Endless knot and the Dharma-Wheel.

Samples

After I had created my screen I was able to create samples which I could experiment with using different colours, foils, fabric pens and spray paints.

 The Final Product

To create the Final Product I had to create a Kodatrace, get it made into a screen, mix my own colours so that I had the colours that I wanted and then complete the print.

I really hope you enjoyed this, please leave a comment if you want to see more like this.

Hope you have a lovely day!

Love Eleanor xx
